Fair and Kind: News

Summer 2010 Newsletter - August 10, 2010

Summer 2010
Welcome to the Summer 2010 Fair and Kind newsletter (we've decided to go quarterly with our updates, at least until our second album is finished).  In this newsletter, we have news about a show in New York this Saturday, an interview with MTV Iggy and a free download of a Joanna Newsom cover.
 Fair and Kind
Unification 2010

We're excited and honored to take part in Unification 2010, this Saturday, August 14th, at 11:00 pm, at Joe's Pub in New York.  You can get tickets here.  Here's the official description:

Commencing at 11 pm on Saturday, August 14 (Pakistan's Independence Day) and continuing into the early morning hours of August 15 (India's Independence Day), UNIFICATION 2010 celebrates 63 years of independence and the voices of talented, socially conscious South Asian/American artists.  With performances by DJ Rekha, The Kominas, Hari Kondabolu, Fair and Kind, and curated by spoken-word duo BROWNSTAR, UNIFICATION 2010 will explore the politics of our motherlands, reveal the experiences of being brown outside of it, and question the tensions between us, while fostering a movement towards a more peaceful, unified South Asia.

Proceeds from UNIFICATION 2010 will support South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT)

Please note that Doors open at 11PM and the show will begin PROMPTLY at 11:15PM

MTV Iggy Interview
Anand was interviewed by MTV Iggy this month about the band and Unification 2010.  Check it out here.

Fair and Kind Webcast
Thanks to everyone who watched our June webcast concert -- we had a lot of fun and will definitely do it again.  Check out some pics from the webcast here and here.

This month, we present a cover of Joanna Newsom's "Peach Plum Pear."  Way back in 2005, long before Fair and Kind existed, we recorded a similar version of "Peach Plum Pear," but all the files got accidentally deleted.  We've recreated it and tried to stay true to our 2005 version.   You can download it by entering your e-mail address into the widget on our home page here.

Our Very First VideoAnand and Arthi
Ever forget what you looked like way back when?  Back in 2007, soon after we had recorded our debut EP, "Rain at Hand," we were approached by our friend, cinematographer Patrick Russo, to film a video for our song, "November."  After loads of post-production, the video's available for viewing here.

Recording Session Pics

Speaking of way back when, we just discovered these pics from our "A Little Past Twilight" recording sessions.  Enjoy!

Thanks to everyone who voted for us to be The Deli Magazine's Band of the Month for April.  After a very close race, we ended up in second place out of five.  We're so thankful for your support!

"Where Love Grows" is streaming in the white Newsletter Downloads player on our website.

We've been in the writing and planning stages of our second album (tentatively titled "Light Music Program") and we're convening in Oakland and demoing parts of the new album this month -- we're excited to see what comes out of our first live writing/recording sessions since our debut, "A Little Past Twilight."  Stay tuned for updates!

January 2010 Newsletter - January 19, 2010

January 2010 Newsletter
Welcome to the first Fair and Kind newsletter of the new decade!  In this newsletter, we have news about Fair and Kind at the movies, our first radio interview, our favorite music of the decade, and some very flattering praise.

Naansense Radio
We're very excited for our interview on NaanSense Radio on Tuesday, January 26th at 9:30 a.m. Eastern (6:30 a.m. Pacific).  NaanSense is a weekly radio show that plays a wide variety of South Asian musicians, and we're honored to be on the same list as the illustrious artists and activists previously featured.  There are many ways to listen (even if you can't listen live), so please tune in.

Don't Forget to Watch The MovieAnand and Arthi
When you head to the movies in January, go way early and you might catch our song "When We're Good"!
"When We're Good" has been picked up by Cinemasounds for January 2010 -- that means you might hear it at AMC, UA, Edwards, Regal, or other theater chains around the country before the previews start, in line for tickets, or when we all go to the lobby.
Don't be confused if you hear it called "Enough Love In My Heart" - as part of our deal with Rescue Records, we had to give each of the songs on A Little Past Twilight alternate names.
So please let us know if you hear our song -- and if we should go see the movie you saw.
Band to Watch?  Aw, shucks.
We are ridiculously flattered to be named on Loud Loop Press's 10 Bands To Watch list alongside The Gorilla Press, with whom we played a super fun show back in May 2009.  We promise to try hard to live up to Loud Loop's expectations!
Fave Music of the 00's
Like most dreamers, we often attempt impossible tasks, like trying to rank our favorite albums and songs from the first ten years of the 2000s.  Comment on our website and let us know who we forgot (and/or why our lists are totally bogus).
KGRL.fm
We're thrilled that KGRL.fm, a fantastic female-focused internet radio station, has started playing tracks from "A Little Past Twilight."  Please check them out, and make sure you request Fair and Kind 24/7.
Good Luck, Michael!

We want to thank musician Michael Zapruder for giving us a shout-out during his interview with the Independent Music Awards, for which he has been nominated in the "Acoustic Song and Folk/Singer-Songwriter Album" category.

If you're so inclined, please vote for Michael here.

So... About That Free Download
We sincerely apologize, but the song we were planning to share this month didn't pan out.  Since we had so much news, we decided to send the newsletter without a download, but we're hoping to have something great for you in February!

We've been big fans of Sepia Mutiny for years, so we were thrilled to see them recommend Fair and Kind earlier this week.  Thanks Taz and Imran!

Scratch My Back - November 12, 2009

Was really into Peter Gabriel back in the day but he hasn't done anything good since the early '90s.  This looks interesting, though- can't you picture him belting out "My Body Is A Cage"?

Even more excited to hear some of these bands do his tracks.

Raspberry Magic

We're excited and honored that our new song, "Where Love Grows," is featured in the upcoming independent feature film Raspberry Magic, written and directed by Leena Pendharkar and produced by Megha Kadakia.
Jesse Clark (Agents Del Futuro), who scored Raspberry Magic's gorgeous soundtrack, co-produced "Where Love Grows" (you may also recall Jesse's remix of "Silty Sea").  Jamie Seyberth,  who engineered and co-produced our debut album, "A Little Past Twilight," mixed the track.
You can download "Where Love Grows" here.
You can check out pics of our recording session here.
We'll be sure to let you know when Raspberry Magic is released and hits your city!
Rescue Records
Fair and Kind is proud to officially join Rescue Records' roster of artists.  We were introduced to Rescue Records, a premier independent music licensing company, by our friend Kiran, who happened to sit next to their general manager on a flight.  He passed our CD on to them, and the rest is history.
The moral of the story is that we love our friends.  And that you should buy several copies of our CD for your next flight.
